Matarrana area
Description
The distinguishing features of the landscape and the authenticity of its people turn the Matarrana region into a quality tourist destination. We await you in the Mediterranean part of Aragon, where Teruel welcomes you and where you will enjoy your stay from the very first moment.
Located in the north east of the Teruel province of the Aragon community of Spain, close to the southern bank of the River Ebro and bordered by Catalonia in the North East and Valencia community to the east and south east. This is the historic Bajo Aragon region of Spain.
It is the northern extreme of the Iberian mountain system and the Maestrazgo , also known as Els Ports. The region of the Matarranya is located in this area. Named after the river of the same name and centred around the attractive regional town of Valderobbres.
The Matarranya offers different and beautiful natural surroundings such as the dramatic “Puertos de Beceite”, the habitat of the Beceite Ibex ; its ancient olive groves, 18 villages rich in history and the 2 rivers of the Matarranya and the Tastavins. It is also the home of excellent local produce such as its Virgin Olive Oil, the famous cured hams of Teruel, local lamb, peaches and local wines with character.
It is a region of great interest and variety and offers exceptional possibilities for an active holiday; Guided or independent walking with the possibility of hard days hiking in the mountains of the Puertos de Beceite or walking through the rolling landscapes of the cultivated farmlands between the historic villages. Another option is cycling the length of the “green way” ( La Via Verde). The dismantled railway running between the town of Alcaniz and the River Ebro and the Mediterranean has been converted into a cycle way of over 100kms and provides excellent though not too demanding cycling through interesting countryside with the opportunity to stop in the many historic villages.
For those seeking a little more adventure then it is here. The gorges of the River Matarranya , known as Estrets del Parrisal, provide excellent opportunity for canyoning and kayaking is also available on the lake near Beceite.
