Excellent, Scenic, Quiet, Romantic

This accommodation was everything it claimed to be on the website. It was quiet with beautiful scenery and the owners were more than nice and very welcoming. Our room was lovely and spacious and was cleaned every day with fresh towels if requested. We have recommended this accommodation to friends who will visit in the near future.

This is the perfect location to get away from it all. Owner particularly good at recommending wonderful beaches and good restaurants in the area which we thoroughly enjoyed.

Getting away from it all

Agua Amarga has long been our favourite destination in Spain, far away from mass tourism, 'Traditional Sunday Roasts', 'brits abroad' and kareoke, where you can immerse yourself in the laid back Spanish way of beach life. But drive a few miles outside the town and turn down a rocky dirt track and you will find THE perfect haven of peace and tranquility. La Almendra y el Gitano, (the Almond and the Gypsy) with just three double rooms and two suites set in wonderfully landscaped gardens atop a small hill, is the ideal getaway destination.

Run by the charming couple Ana and Angel (short for Angelique) where the sun rises through your bedroom window and sets through your front door. Breakfasts are a fairly informal time with a good selection of fruits, meats, breads, cheese and cereals. During the day, you are free to help yourself to drinks if there is no-one around as long as you note what you have had on a peice of paper left on the counter.

There are plenty of different shady areas in the grounds leading down to a beautiful pool with comfortable sun loungers. No having to get up early to put your towels on a sun lounger here. Further down the same dirt track, don't worry hire cars can go anywhere, is the wonderful el Plomo beach where clothing is optional and the water is crystal clear. If you want beach facitlities, Agua Amarga beach is only ten minutes drive away.

We will definately be going back but don't tell everyone, we don't want it getting too booked up!!

We booked 4 nights in the Almendra ( casa rural suite) to wind down after a couple of stressful months. Our GPS did not function, but we could find the case rural nonetheless in the pitch-dark of the national park. Although the casa rural normally does not serve dinner on Sunday evenings, they did organise for us dinner, even if we arrived late, so a nice gesture to start with. Although exhausted, with had a succulent and exhaustive dinner. We had one of the suites, which was a gigantic room, with large balcony and bathroom, and a confy bed. Breakfast next days was simple but very earthy. We loved the easy-going nature of the place, this is not a hotel, but casa rural, so do not expect fully manned reception or bar, it is a serve-yourself place, where you catch a beer from the fridge and write down what you consumed. We spent some good afternoons by the pool, which we had all for ourselves, to wind down after discovering all the lovely places in the nature park. The day-to-day management of the casa rural is in the hands of Amalia, and she is really the soul of the place. Well-humpured, funny, helpful, and a walking directory of all the good places to eat and visit in the region. Nothing is too much of a hassle for her. In our many travels, we met a lot of people and stayed in a lot of places, but the Almendra is one of those places where you straight away feel at home.We also booked a massage by Juani, who makes it to the casa rural and gives the massage in your room, very professionally done at democratic prices, so take that opportunity as well once there. The only regret we have about our stay is that we did not book one night longer, if you are really fed up with traditional hotels, are looking for something different, need to wind down in a lovely corner of Spain, book some nights in this place. On a side-note, the village of Aguas Amargas some 10 minutes drive has a lovely beach, some good bars and do go to the La Villa restaurant, a bit more upscale but lovely place with lovely food. We both travelled Spain extensively, but La Almendra, Cabo de Gata and Aguas Amargas has beaten all our expectations.Room Tip: just go for the suites, for a bit more money you have a gigantic room(Review published in Tripadvisor)
