El Portal de Echaurren restaurant in La Rioja has been awarded a second Michelin star at the ceremony in Bilbao´s Guggenheim Museum. El Portal de Echaurren was among the 20 Spanish restaurants which will appear in the Michelin Guide to Spain and Portugal 2014.
Francis Paniego, the head chef of the Portal del Echaurren restaurant, is known for his avant-garde reinterpretation of the traditional cuisine of La Rioja, as well as his being the first restaurant in the region to gain a Michelin star in 2004.
His study of aromatized olive oils and the use the aromas of smoke from vine wood are a few of the technical contributions made by this chef from La Rioja.
