Like every year “la Cridà” (“the shout” or “the call”) marks the start of Las Fallas. The fallera major and her court of honour invites all Valencians, as well as foreigners and tourists, to enjoy the festivities.

The majestic Serrano Towers have been the setting for this call since 1954. These towers were formerly the gates to the city and today are a symbol and emblem of the city.

PLAZA AYUNTAMIENTO- MASCLETÁ

The mascletá is the pyrotechnic spectacle par excellence. It was originally very different to the spectacle as we know it today. And it was not until 1945 when in the Plaza del Caudillo (now Plaza del Ayuntamiento) that the pyrotechnician Antonio Caballer set in motion the first pyrotechnic spectacle as we know it today. Previously, this spectacle in which men ran through the street setting off fireworks and flares travelled through up to thirty streets. At that time the Square was a totally different space to that of today, it had 3 fountains and an underground flower market. Its subsequent renovation, which was completed in the 1960s, gave it its current layout.

LONJA DE LA SEDA/SILK EXCHANGE-FALLERA COSTUMES

The spectacular building of La Lonja, dating back to the fifteenth century is the best example of the mark that the Silk Route left on Valencia. The quality, and design of the intricately embroidered floral silk fabrics, are a key element of Valencian clothing. The popular fallera costume is the perfect example of the importance the long tradition of the use of silk in the region. Each year, the “espolines” (hand embroidered silk fabrics) of the Falleras Mayores are the most prestigious and desired fabrics to be produced in the region.

CATHEDRAL AND PLAZA DE LA VIRGEN – THE OFFERING

For the great multitudinous act of the Offering thousands of falleros and falleras, and their commissions, converge on the Plaza de la Virgen. The flowers that they carry, serve to make the floral mantle that covers “la cheperudeta“, the Virgin of the Forsaken patron saint of Valencia. It is a parade worthy of witnessing, full of music, colour and of course flowers. It attracts large crowds with thousands of visitors and locals lining the route of the parade.

The offering, as it is known today, was not seen in its current form until 1946, year in which the fallas commissions were invited to collectively participate. Prior to this the Offering took place in the interior of the Cathedral of Valencia. It was not until 1949 that the square hosted its first floral offering due to the sheer number of participants. Paying a visit to the monumental Cathedral and the Plaza de la Virgen, is therefore a must on this journey, to contemplate the Virgin’s imposing completed floral mantle.

This is just a small glimpse of all that you can find and discover in the city of Valencia during Fallas. Here you will find the 2019 Fallas Programme, to ensure that you won’t miss any of its important events.
