Discover the Picos de Europa with Boutique Hotels Spain
We start October amidst the mountains and full of energy!
That’s because here at Boutique Hotels Spain, neither the rain nor the cold can dampen our enthusiasm for travel. It’s at this time year that rural tourism opens its doors to invite us to enjoy the magic of autumn.
Our destination today takes us to the Picos de Europa, a breath of fresh air in the heart of Cantabria. Coinciding with the celebration of its Centenary, we suggest several plans for you to enjoy this idyllic setting. Just in case you are not familiar with the area, let us tell you a little more about this wonderful region before we get going:
The Covadonga Mountain National Park was the first National Park to be declared in Spain 100 years ago. It gained its current name of the Picos de Europa National Park in 1995 and covers an area of more than 60,000 hectares. It serves to protect the three most imposing mountain ranges in the region of Cantabria which boast forests on their Northern slopes and the mountainous areas of Asturias and Léon. In addition to being a natural park, UNESCO declared the area a Biosphere Reserve with the aim of reconciling the conservation of its biological diversity and the economic development of the populations settled in these areas.
So now let’s begin the journey!
PLAN A: Routes through nature
At the southern end of the park, you can find Fuente Dé, a corner of the park known as the starting point for many of the routes among these impressive mountain ranges. There you will find the famous cable car of Fuente Dé, which in only 4 minutes takes you to an altitude of 1823 metres, offering breath-taking views of the surrounding landscape. Without a doubt, it’s the best option if you want to walk in the Picos without expending too much effort on your part.
If you want a little more adventure, you can combine trails on horseback along with the more conventional trails on foot. One of the most beautiful routes to enjoy this autumn is the circular trail that starts from Fuente Dé, continuing through the Quebres forest to Pisandobres.
A great way to experience nature first hand!
PLAN B: Gastronomic Route
Without forgetting the impressive views from the mountain, it’s also highly recommended that you take a gastronomic tour to taste the delicacies of the area and try the local produce with denomination of origin (D.O.). The cheese and honey stand out, categorized with three protected D.O.s: Liébana cheese, Bejes-tresviso cheese and Liébana honey. Whether enjoyed in the company or your family, your partner or friends, a visit to a cheese maker in the Picos de Europa is the perfect way to delight all palates. While there are many cheese makers you can visit in the area, we recommend the Alles, Brañuca, Andara and La Lolla. In addition to cheese and honey, another of the classics of the area is the cocido lebaniego, a local stew which provides an excellent example of traditional cuisine, full of flavours and perfect for giving you the energy and vitality needed in the mountains.
PLAN C: Discover the Berrea
And just in case that isn’t enough we have a final plan and one that will delight any animal lovers. More specifically we are talking about deer, which are the real stars of the park. During the summer months the bucks shed their antlers, but with the arrival of autumn and newly grown antlers courtship begins. This process is known as Berrea in Spanish, due to the call that the male emits in order to attract the females. This spectacle, which can be enjoyed until mid-October and especially at dawn and dusk, is a unique experience that will not leave you unmoved.
Finally, to finish our tour we have found the perfect place for you to stay. Situated in a splendid valley, in the foothills of the Sierra del Sueve mountain range, we find the Boutique Hotel Palace of Cutre. An 16th century Asturian palace, with its own period wall, tower and chapel.
A magnificent place in which to relax after a long day and enjoy impressive views of the Picos de Europa. Its host, Javier Alvarez, with his deep knowledge of the National Park of the Picos de Europa will help make sure your stay is truly a unique one.
