If what you are feeling like is a rural getaway, we suggest visiting one of the most beautiful villages in Spain. A village that held the title of being the Capital of Rural Tourism in 2017. We are talking about Sigüenza, in Guadalajara, just over an hour away from the city of Madrid (130 km).

We think you are going to be pleasantly surprised…
What can I do?
Sigüenza is a historic medieval city, with a great wealth of culture and monuments. Stroll through its streets and discover the monumental Cathedral of Santa Maria de Sigüenza, its main attraction. It is a building that combines different architectural styles with great beauty; Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance… Stand in the centre of the Plaza Mayor or Main Square and take in the beauty that surrounds you. You can visit the Castle of the Bishops of Sigüenza, the Casa Doncel, the Park of the Alameda and the Monastery of Nuestra Señora de Huertos.
Singüenza is the starting point of the second stage of the Quijote Route and culminates in Atienza, which is only 35km away. Here is another of those wonderful villages, where you will be able to visit the Castle of Atienza, scene of the successful series Game of Thrones.
If you are a nature lover, you will be able to explore the natural treasures and routes that can be found throughout the surrounding area. Protected natural spaces such as the Río Dulce Natural Park or the Micro-reserve of the Saladares del Río Salado, wonderful places for hiking.
Where can I stay?
If you want to treat yourself to an unforgettable weekend, enjoy your stay in our Boutique Hotel Molino de Alcuneza, which is also a member of the Relais & Chateaux group and located only 5 km from Sigüenza.
Housed inside the walls of a 500-year old flour mill, in this magical and charming family hotel, with restaurant, spa and swimming pool… you will find dedicated and excellent hosts, brother and sister Blanca and Samuel Moreno.
Your only concern here is to let go and relax. In this beautiful location, all rooms, 17 in total, have views of the Alto Henares valley. In this haven of tranquillity, your stay will be punctuated by birdsong upon awakening and the gurgling of a close by stream. Why not make your stay just that little more special by enjoying a spa circuit?
Where can I eat?
You won’t have to go far to enjoy the finest gastronomy in the area. Can we tell you an open secret? Recently, the excellent cuisine of El Molino de Alcuneza has received its first Michelin Star. Samuel Moreno has trained with the best, among them Sergi Arola and the Roca brothers.
On his way up, he decided to specialise in bakery, alongside some of the greats such as Jordi Butrón and Xavier Barriga. This choice seems all the more appropriate with both the hotel and restaurant being located in a fully refurbished mill. These days it can proudly boast that its bread, 100% handmade, is the most widely sought after in the area for its quality and excellence.
Samuel´s cuisine emphasises a reworked traditional style. The chef uses quality seasonal products, mainly from the local area, either from the garden itself or from local producers. A cuisine that uses local produce and pure flavours, such as truffles, mushrooms and game combined with careful presentation. The wine and food pairing is carried out by Blanca, a sommelier with an exquisite taste in her selection of wines with D.O. Her winery now has more than 80 wines from which to choose.
How to get there?
If you want to have a fun and original day, climb aboard the Medieval Train to Sigüenza, this service is provided by Renfe and is available from the end of April. The journey departs from Madrid, and on boarding you will be welcomed by an entourage of period characters. During the journey you will be able to taste typical delicacies of the region and the journey is enlivened with live medieval music and performances… jesters and jugglers inside a train! Now that’s something not to miss!
All we have mentioned really has to be experienced to be fully appreciated. An oasis awaits in our charming hotel, so don’t think twice… Pack your bags and visit Sigüenza!
