Our parents inherited a small hotel – El Echaurren. They transformed it, converting it into their home and a home for all who visited. Our mother Marisa refined the traditional culinary meals of Granny Julia and stamped her own character and elegance on the dishes. Her efforts were recognised when she won Spain’s National Gastronomic Award in 1987.
And now we, Marisa’s children – the fifth generation of the family, are dedicated to maintaining the essence of the Echaurren while at the same time invest in its future.
As such, we’ve converted our old hostel into a modern, comfortable hotel where nothing is lacking. Our aim has been to give everything a contemporary twist but without losing the sense of warmth. You’ll notice a strong Nordic influence in the interior design. We’ve continued the traditional cooking of our mother which you can enjoy in the Echaurren Traditional restaurant. In 2002 we opened El Portal de Echaurren where Francis lets his creative juices flow freely. It specialises in avant-garde dishes – very personal and primarily sourced from the local area.
Two years after its launch El Portal de Echaurren became the first-ever restaurant in La Rioja to gain a Michelin star. It has maintained this distinction ever since. In 2012 Francis won Spain’s National Gastronomic Award, a quarter of a century after his mother.

The place to wine and dine in style
Echaurren Traditional is a key part of La Rioja’s culinary history, thanks to the efforts of Marisa Sánchez. Marisa created the menu of 20-odd unforgettable dishes. Her croquetas are legendary and customers return time after time for the beans, chickpea and chorizo stew, fish soup and lamb dishes among others. Relying largely on local ingredients, the menu changes throughout the year.
El Portal de Echaurren
By 2001, and with Marisa’s youngest son Francis playing an ever more important role in the kitchen, the Echuarren’s menu was already noted for its creativity. Francis spent time learning his craft in the kitchens of Spain’s most famous Michelin Three star restaurants including El Bulli, Arzak and Akelarre.
With the help and guidance of friends and customers, Francis launched the Portal de Echaurren restaurant in 2002. In 2004 it became the first restaurant in La Rioja to gain a Michelin star, a distinction it has kept ever since. In 2012, Francis was awarded Spain’s most prestigious culinary prize, the National Gastronomic Award.
The open hearth has always been at the heart of the Echaurren hotel. We have extensively modernised the Chimney Bar putting in long French windows which open onto the terrace and garden facing the church. In winter, with the fire burning, the bar retains its original cosy character. In summer, with the French windows open, it extends into the garden making it an excellent place to dine in the evening.
We serve a tapas menu in the bar. And it’s a very special one based on small portions of our best haute-cuisine and traditional dishes offered at an affordable price.

How to get there
From Madrid take the A-1 to Burgos then the N-120 to Santo Domingo de la Calzada. Then follow the LR-111 to Ezcaray.
From Bilbao take the AP-68 to Haro and follow the LR-111 to Ezcaray.
From Barcelona take the AP-2 to Zaragoza then the AP-68 to Navarrete. Follow the A-12 / N-120 to Santo Domingo. From this point, the LR-111 to Ezcaray.
